5.0/5 One of the best space museum in the world !
Experience Date: Nov 16, 2009
Space Experience Points : 80
I visited the Kennedy Space Center on the 16th of November 2009 during a trip to Florida in combination with the Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-129 launch. We were lucky with no delay or cancellation. We watched the launch from the Main Visitor Center, and even if it is quite away from the launch pad (you cannot see the launch pad due to some trees) the sight and the sound was quite impressive.
We spent all the day in the KSC trying an seeing as much as possible. We took the tour to the Saturn V hangar, we watched the launch simulation of an Apollo mission in a reconstructed mission control room, we visited a facility with the technicians working on a ISS module and the Astronaut Hall of Fame (one of my favorite places). We did also the Shuttle Launch Experience.
At that time a full scale replica of a Space Shuttle named Explorer (known today as Independence) was displayed at KSC (it has been moved to Houston in the 2012 after 8 years at Cape Canaveral from 1993 to the 2011). I remember a mock-up part of a satellite in the payload bay and the mockup of the cockpit with a mannequin in the orange pressure suit. Close by the shuttle there were on display a couple of solid rocket boosters attached to an external tank. It was an amazing day and occasionally I look at the pictures I took in that day dreaming to go back again one day (once the kids will be a bit older).
